CK Birla Hospital® recently made headlines with its successful treatment of a 33-year-old Australian patient who had been battling cervical spinal stenosis for two years. The patient had been unable to walk more than 50 steps without the assistance of two crutches due to balance difficulties. He experienced intense pain in his right leg and numbness in both feet. Misdiagnosed in Australia as having compressed nerves in the lumbar spine, he was advised to undergo lower back surgery. However, after consulting with the team of doctors at CK Birla Hospital®, he received an accurate diagnosis and a different treatment path.

Dr. Ashwani Maichand, Director of the Department of Orthopaedics, led the team that correctly diagnosed the patient’s condition as cervical spinal stenosis, a condition characterized by a too-narrow space within the backbone. Instead of proceeding with the initially advised lumbar spine surgery, they recommended cervical spine surgery using advanced robotic technology and minimally invasive surgery (MIS).

The surgical procedure, deemed high-risk due to the patient’s weight and possible complications such as paralysis and loss of bowel and bladder control, was carried out with precision and accuracy using a diamond tip neurosurgical burr. CK Birla Hospital®’s use of the most advanced robotic technology and MIS technique contributed to the outstanding treatment outcome.

Post-surgery, the patient experienced a remarkable recovery. There was no need for blood transfusions or an ICU stay, and within just two days, he was able to climb stairs without neuro weakness. He also reported a 50% reduction in foot numbness. The patient expressed his gratitude to Dr. Maichand and CK Birla Hospital® for their expertise and reassurance, which allowed him to proceed with the minimally invasive surgery, ultimately leading to a pain-free and healthy life.

CK Birla Hospital®’s success in this case is a testament to its commitment to providing global healthcare standards using advanced medical innovations and techniques. Mr. Vipul Jain, Chief Business Officer of CK Birla Hospital®, emphasized their dedication to delivering high-quality healthcare. Mr. Amit Sharma, Unit Head of CK Birla Hospital® Delhi, further highlighted the hospital’s focus on patient-centric and clinically reliable care. The hospital will continue utilizing medically advanced treatments to improve patient outcomes and uphold its legacy of clinical excellence.
