To kick off National C. diff Awareness Month and its annual “See C.diff” public education campaign, the Peggy Lillis Foundation (PLF) has announced their 2021 FIGHT C. DIFF Gala, set for Monday, November 1, 2021. Tickets to the virtual event are free and available now. In addition to its work to bring awareness to C. diff and its implications, the Foundation is also calling for C. diff to be designated as a Nationally Notifiable Disease.

To celebrate the work of PLF and other leaders in the fight to make C. diff rare, treatable and survivable, several companies have sponsored the event including Presenting Sponsor Ferring Pharmaceuticals, as well as Pfizer, Finch, Summit Therapeutics, and TechLab.

“We wouldn’t be where we are today without the inspiration, dedication and courage of the C. diff patient community,” said Lionel Fajolle, Vice President, Specialty Care Business Unit, Ferring U.S. “The stories of people touched by C. diff infection, inspire us to continuously strive to develop novel therapies to break the vicious cycle of recurrence and ultimately help people live better lives.”

Three awards will be given away to honorees at the event for leadership, advocacy and innovation. The Leadership Award will go to Debra Goff, PharmD, Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. The Advocate Award will go to Christine Fuhrman of the Peggy Lillis Foundation. The Innovator Award will go to Vivian Loo, MD, M.Sc., McGill University Health Centre.

“We are delighted to be honoring three incredible women this year. My mother Peggy was a strong woman who advocated for her children, her family and her colleagues. As an educator, Mom believed that knowledge is power. This year’s honorees embody those qualities. As we look toward a post-COVID-19 world, we must ensure that our leaders learn from this terrible time. That means focusing considerable resources on infectious disease education, patient engagement, surveillance and public reporting as well as ending the overuse of antimicrobials,” said Peggy Lillis Foundation Executive Director, Christian John Lillis.

November is National C. diff Awareness Month where numerous organizations and foundations come together to raise awareness of the impact of Clostridioides difficile, a global infection that has caused nearly 500,000 infections in one year, and 29,000 deaths. The Gram-positive, spore-forming bacterium or germ can be found throughout the environment in soil, air, water, human and animal feces, and contaminated food products.
